One socket, many options...

The MultiTech
SocketModem creates communication-ready devices by integrating
data/fax or Internet functionality into a single product design.
The SocketModem is a space efficient embedded modem that provides
56K communication or Internet connectivity to any device without
adding development time and costs. It complies with telecom requirements
globally and is approved for worldwide shipments.
With connect rates from 300 to 56,000 bits per second (bps), the
SocketModem is targeted at applications that periodically need
to send or receive data over a standard telephone line or the
Internet. It is an ideal solution for:
Industrial
and medical remote monitoring systems, Remote diagnostics, Remote
Metering, Point-of-Sale terminals, ATM terminals, Credit card
& checque card verification systems, Data collection, Ticketing
machines, Security systems, Gas pumps, Television set-top boxes,
Vending/gaming machines, Appliances
Integration
Reduces Space, Power and Cost
The SocketModem integrates the controller, data pump and data access
arrangement (DAA) in one module. This integration requires low power,
low real estate and provides an overall reduction in costs.

Reduces Development Time
The SocketModem can make your device communication and/or Internet
ready without requiring significant hardware changes to its design.
The SocketModem actually provides faster time-to-market because
it relieves the burden and expense of writing Internet application
and modem controller code. The complete, ready-to-integrate modem
module allows you to enhance your product while you focus on developing
the devices core features.
Real-Time Data Transfer
By adding MultiTech SocketModem to any system application, you will
achieve real-time data transfers at the fastest analogue modem speeds.
For data communications, the industry-standard V.92 model downloads
at 56K speeds. For fax applications, it supports the new industry-standard
V.34 (Super G3 fax with speeds up to 33.6Kbps) or V.17 (14.4Kbps)
faxing using Class 1 or Class 2 commands.
Internet-Enable any Device
SocketModemIP embeds Internet protocols inside any device allowing
it to send and receive data over the Internet without connecting
to a PC or gateway server. It can also serve a single Web page in
response to a web browser request.
Industry-Standard Modem Commands
The SocketModem provides industry-standard AT-style commands for
ease of integration into your existing software applications. In
addition, it also provides industry-standard error correction and
data compression to shorten transfer time and ensure data is sent
error-free.
SocketModem Pin-Out
The
SocketModem interfaces easily with existing products through a standard
serial communication channel. The complete on-board DAA interfaces
with an RJ-11 jack for direct connection to the public switched
telephone network. The SocketModem provides an audio circuit output
for audio call-progress monitoring, and the data/fax SocketModem
features LED driver outputs for visual monitoring of Carrier Detect,
Transmit Data, Receive Data and DTR signals. The SocketModem is
a Data Terminal Equipment (DTE) device with a TTL serial or parallel
interface and asynchronous protocol support. The serial DTE channel
is capable of transfer speeds to 230.4Kbps and can be interfaced
directly to a UART or microcontroller.
Advanced Set-up and Control Features
The SocketModem has several advanced features built into the design.
It supports remote configuration which means you can have central
site set-up and control of the remote modem modules. In addition,
the modules provide three-number storage for automatic dialling
capabilities and non-volatile memory (NoVRAM) to store user profiles.
Global Compliance
The SocketModem has successfully completed international compliance
testing (homologation) for global approval. This means you can specify
one module for your design without having to integrate specific
country approved modules for each system used across the world.
Firmware Upgrades
The SocketModem also features flash memory so you can update firmware
with the latest enhancements MultiTech has to offer.
Developer's Kit
The SocketModem Developer's Kit allows you to plug in the SocketModem
and use it for testing, programming and evaluation. The kit includes
one development board with RS-232 cable, power supply, RJ-11 cable
and a SocketModem or SocketModemIP sample.
Other Embedded Solutions
MultiTech's SocketEthernetIP is a complete, ready to integrate serial-to-Ethernet
module for connecting legacy devices to an IP network. |

Embedded
Data/Fax Regional SocketModem
The Multi-Tech
SmartSCM™ SocketModem with SmartDAA™ technology supports
analogue data up to 56K bps, 33.6K bps, and 14.4K bps, and analogue
fax up to 14.4K bps. For most existing designs, the SmartSCM SocketModem
is a drop-in replacement for the SF56D/SP, SF336D/SP, or SF144D/SP
SocketModem with the exception of some voice features. This SocketModem
is also ideal for new designs due to its low profile and use of
Conexant's SmartSCM Single Chip Modem with SmartDAA. The SocketModem
stores over 38 country profiles in memory and more can be added
as required.
Features
As a V.90/K56flex™ data modem (SC56), the SmartSCM SocketModem
can receive data at speeds up to 56K bps from a digitally connected
V.90- or K56flex-compatible central site modem. Taking advantage
of the PSTN, which is primarily digital except for some client modem
to central office local loops, V90/K56flex modems are ideal for
applications such as remote access to an Internet Service Provider
(ISP), on-line service, or corporate site. In this mode, the SocketModem
can send data at speeds up to V.34 rates. As a V.34 data modem (SC56
and SC336), the SmartSCM SocketModem operates at line speeds up
to 33.6K bps. As a V.32bis modem, the SmartSCM SocketModem operates
at lines speeds up to 14.4K bps.
Error correction (V.42/MNP 2-4) and data compression (V.42bis/MNP
5) maximise data transfer integrity and boost average data throughput
up to 230.4K bps. Non-error-correcting mode is also supported.
As a fax modem, the SmartSCM SocketModem supports V.17 fax for Class
1 or 2 send and receive rates up to 14.4K bps.

data
The Multi-Tech
SocketModemIP creates Internet-ready devices by integrating V.92/56K
modem functionality and a complete TCP/IP protocol stack into a
single product design. The space efficient (1" x 3"),
ready-to-integrate embedded modem sends and receives data, voice
and images via e-mail, HTTP or socket interfaces. SocketModemIP
brings Internet connectivity to any device without adding development
time and costs. SocketModemIP also complies with telecom requirements
globally allowing for worldwide shipments.
Sending and Receiving Data
SocketModemIP initiates an ISP connection upon command from the
host device. Using the embedded Internet protocols, it then executes
commands to dial, login, authenticate, communicate and sign off
with the ISP. If a line to the ISP is unavailable, SocketModemIP
can function as a regular modem and send the data over a phone line,
bypassing the IP features.
Features
Extended AT command set for IP configuration and embedded programming
